- Honda Activa electric launch in 2024
- Will be based on Activa 6G
- Maximum speed of 50kmph
Honda India is planning to launch its first electric scooter – the Activa electric, by early next year. This development was confirmed by one of the top honchos of the company.
The Activa electric is being co-developed in India and Japan but will be entirely manufactured in India to keep the costs in check. Interestingly, this new EV is based on the current Activa 6G platform but will see an electric powertrain and a fixed battery. These parts will likely be manufactured in-house at Honda’s factory in Manesar. In fact, the company is planning to invest heavily in developing hybrid assembly lines, where it could manufacture ICE and EV two-wheelers at the same time.
The Activa electric will have a top speed of just 50kmph, which makes us believe that the brand is focusing on customers with extremely short commuting distances. However, there are no details on the battery specs or overall charging time.
Honda said it wasn’t focusing a lot on building new EVs for the Indian market, but it decided to make one e-scooter as the EV segment in India is growing. It will eventually launch newer EV models, but as of now, most of the energy and time will be spent on ICE products as the company believes these products will continue to form a significant portion of the market for the next few years.
