Honda has showcased the electric-powered version of its iconic moped called EV-Cub, at the 2016 Bangkok International Motor Show in Thailand.
Since the first Honda Super Cub rolled out of the factory in 1958, the company has sold over 8.7 crore units of the moped, worldwide. As a tribute to the Super Cub, the EV-Cub has been designed to look like a replica of the original model. Despite it still carrying the old-school design influence, the EV-Cub manages to look contemporary thanks to the alloy wheels, digital display and the elegant paint scheme.
However, the biggest talking point about the EV-Cub is its powertrain. The EV-Cub is rumoured to be powered by 0.9kWh battery which churns out 3.8 horsepower, capable of propelling the EV-Cub to speeds up to 30kmph. The heavy battery gets a low and central position, to lower the centre of gravity. The battery is detachable, which means the rider can remove it and charge it from a standard wall socket.
The EV-Cub represents Honda’s commitment towards encouraging eco-friendly mobility solutions. The EV-Cub will go into production by 2018, though sale will be limited to the Japanese market in the initial phase. We can expect the rest of the Asian markets to get their first taste of the EV-Cub by the second half of 2018.
