Looks like Honda won’t stop chasing its ex-partner Hero MotoCorp when it comes to creating a new two-wheeler segment. A picture has revealed that the Indian arm of Honda is developing an electric scooter that will make its entry into the nascent electric scooter market.
As per the patent design, this new electric scooter is expected to be based on the famous Metropolitan scooter that is sold in developed markets. While there is hardly any information other than the patent design, it is still very early to comment on the development phase of the scooter. However, earlier this quarter, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India had said that they will be creating a new segment in the Indian two-wheeler industry with a revolutionary model and it will make its first global appearance at the 2016 Auto Expo. We previously believed that it could be the PCX 150 scooter, however, with this new electric scooter, the big claim makes perfect sense.
There are a handful of electric two-wheeler players in India, with Hero Electric leading the industry. Hero MotoCorp planned to enter this segment with its Leap hybrid, which has a 125cc petrol engine and is also powered by lithium-ion batteries. It will be interesting to see the final product from Honda and the success of this new scooter will depend on the pricing.
Stay tuned as we bring you more information on the Honda electric scooter.
