Honda might be planning to launch a new 150cc scooter to rival the Vespa VXL 150. Our sources indicate that the scooter will be unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo, before hitting the production lines in mid-2016.
While the PCX 150 is the only 150cc scooter in Honda’s global line-up the high sticker price of the model makes is implausible for the Indian market. As it would be necessary to price the scooter competitively, it is very unlikely that this state of the art model will end up being sold in India. Hence, the other option left with Honda would be to develop a new 150cc model based on the current Activa’s versatile platform. This platform already caters to the Activa-i, Activa 3G, Dio and the Activa 125, and it won’t be too far-fetched to assume that it can also underpin a new 150cc scooter.
The 150cc scooter segment in India currently has just a single contender – Vespa. As Vespa is hailed as a premium and highly sought-after brand, Honda will have to be quite generous when it comes to the equipment levels of this 150cc scooter. We can expect to see all the top of the drawer stuff, including alloy wheels, telescopic suspension, disc brake and large 12-inch front wheel on the new scooter, apart from other technological creature comforts. While Honda hasn’t given any official statement about this new scooter, we can expect more details to be revealed as we get closer to the Auto Expo.
