The Honda Activa has set a new record by crossing the 1.5 crore unit sales mark. It is the only scooter in India to have achieved this milestone.
Launched in 2001, the Activa quickly became the market leader within the first three years of its launch. By 2012-13 the Activa’s annual sales had already crossed the 12 lakh mark and continued to rise steadily upto 27.59 lakh units in the financial year 2016-17. According to Minoru Kato, president and CEO of HMSI, the scooter segment share has doubled from sixteen per cent in 2009-10 to 32 per cent in 2016-17. The Activa has contributed enormously to that figure, being the default scooter for most families. The company believes that there is even more scope for growth from tier 2 and tier 3 towns.
