Honda has recalled the VFR1200F touring motorcycle in Japan. The recall has been issued to fix a technical glitch in the motorcycle’s driveshaft and covers over 1,852 motorcycles.
The recall affects both the manual and DCT-equipped VFR1200F motorcycles. The affected motorcycles were manufactured between March 2, 2010 and September 2, 2015. The defective bearing sealant of the propeller shaft can cause the bearings to wear out because of the heat caused by friction. This can result in the propeller shaft interfering with the swing arm, causing the bike to crash.
So far, there haven’t been any accidents due to the issue, though one component failure has been reported in Japan. Honda will be replacing the propeller shaft of all motorcycles as a precautionary measure. As manufacturing these propeller shafts takes time, Honda will initially be inspecting the driveshafts of all the VFR1200Fs as an interim measure, and replacing the faulty components in due time free of charge.
The Honda VFR1200F bikes were imported to India as CBUs and there is a chance a few of the affected motorcycles might have been sold in India. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India was unavailable for a comment on whether the VFR1200F bikes sold in India are affected by this recall.
