The commuter motorcycle market in India brings the majority volume when it comes to sales. Especially for a price-sensitive market like India, affordable and simple motorcycles have also been integral. So, manufacturers have a wide range of options from 100cc to 125cc. In this story, we’ll compare the newly launched Honda Shine 100 with the Bajaj Platina 100 on paper.
Design
It’s quite evident that the Shine 100 has taken design inspiration from its 125cc sibling. However, the baby Shine’s design is rather simpler and the proportions are quite small as well. It gets a flat and slim fuel tank, lightweight construction and appears quite small overall. The Platina 100 too follows a similar philosophy and looks uncomplicated. However, Bajaj has equipped it with an LED DRL, a one-up compared to the Shine 100.
Engine
Honda has powered the Shine 100 with a 98.9cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that makes 7.28 bhp and 8.05 Nm. It’s linked to a four-speed gearbox. On the other hand, the Platina 100 features a 102cc motor that dishes out 7.9bhp and 8.3Nm. While the numbers are marginally higher than that of the Shine 100, the Platina 100 also weighs about 18kg more. So, the power-to-weight ratio for the two would differ and give the Shine 100 a small advantage.
Hardware
Honda has equipped the Shine 100 with telescopic front forks and dual rear shocks. Its braking hardware comprises a front and rear drum unit with CBS (Combined Braking System). The Shine 100 rides on 17-inch wheels wrapped in tubed tyres. Bajaj has equipped the Platina 100 with telescopic front forks and dual rear springs. It gets a similar braking and tyre setup as the Shine. So, both motorcycles are even on the hardware front.
Dimensions
The Shine 100 weighs 99kg and gets a 9-litre fuel tank. Its seat height is also quite low and accessible at 786mm. Meanwhile, the Platina tips the scale at 117kg and is equipped with an 11-litre fuel tank. Its seat is slightly taller at 804mm.
Price
Honda has priced the Shine 100 at Rs. 64,900 whereas the Platina 100 retails at Rs. 65,856 (both ex-showroom, Delhi). The price difference between the two 100cc commuter bikes isn’t much and the overall package too is quite similar. So, which one should you buy? Well, we recommend you watch this space for a detailed comparison of the duo in the real world.
