Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) sold 50.08 lakh two-wheelers in the FY 2016-17. With this, the company has cemented its position as the second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India.
This annual sales figure is 12 per cent more than what Honda had achieved in the FY 2015-16. With this, the company now commands a 27 per cent market share in India which is one per cent higher than last year. Honda’s scooter range has been the biggest contributor to this growth, spearheaded by the Activa. The company sold 33.51 lakh scooters in the FY 2016-17, a figure which is 16 per cent higher than that of the previous year. And while the country’s overall export numbers dropped by six per cent, Honda shipped off 2.83 lakh two-wheelers in the last financial year, a jump of 41 per cent.
HMSI has also become the first subsidiary of Honda to achieve 50 lakh unit sales in a financial year. While the second half of last year witnessed subdued sales due to demonetisation, domestic sales numbers are now slowly getting back on track, and Honda is optimistic about improving its sales numbers over the FY 2017-18.
