Honda has revealed that it has secured a three-year contract to continue supplying engines for the Moto2 class. The Japanese manufacturer will carry on supplying engines to ExternPro, the Spanish company responsible for managing the Moto2 engines, till the end of the 2018 season.
Honda has been the sole engine supplier since the Moto2 class was introduced as a replacement for the 250cc two-stroke intermediate class. Moto2 motorcycles use a single spec Honda CBR 600cc engines, which are prepared according to the specifications by ExternPro. ExternPro, which a part of Parque Tecnólogico de MotorLand Aragon, is also responsible for the maintenance of the engines, throughout the season.
While making the official announcement, Mr Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC Executive VP said, “The Moto2 category continues to advance and prepare riders for the premier class and Honda are very happy to support this class for a further three years. Together with ExternPro and Dorna we will continue to work hard to provide the best equipment for this class.”
Since the inaugural race took place in 2010, the Honda engines have not only been competent for racing, but have also proved to be highly reliable in this extremely taxing form of motorsport. This helped Honda in extending its contract in face of the competition from other manufacturers like the Austrian manufacturer, KTM.
