Leaked patent images of a new Honda Monkey have fuelled rumours about Honda’s plans to reintroduce the iconic motorcycle in a modern avatar.
While Honda already has the contemporary-looking MSX Grom in its current line-up, the design of the Monkey will hark back to its namesake from the 1960s. However, it does get modern touches like disc brakes, inverted front forks and a state of the art sub-frame and swingarm. Under the skin, we can expect it to get the same 125cc engine which powers the MSX, delivering 9.6bhp and 11Nm of torque. It also gets 10-spoke alloy wheels, LED lights and an engine bash plate to boost its rugged character.
Honda’s monkey bikes have earned a cult status among beginners and enthusiasts alike over the past five decades. The company even came out with an automatic version of this bike powered by the Activa 3G’s automatic powertrain for the Indian market christened as Navi, which has turned out to be a big hit among the masses. With the new Monkey, the Japanese manufacturer will aim to attract a bigger audience by having a wider range of the motorcycle in its portfolio. We can expect the Monkey to debut at either the INTERMOT Show in October or the EICMA Show in November.
