While Husqvarna’s plans of introducing the single-cylinder Vitpilens is an open secret, a new prototype spotted in Europe has fuelled rumours about the existence of a bigger and badder litre-class motorcycle. Expected to be christened Vitpilen 1301, this motorcycle is based on KTM’s flagship streetfighter – the 1290 Super Duke.
The Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 will share a major chunk of its components including the frame, swingarm, brakes, suspension and the powertrain with its Austrian sibling. The styling though, is a complete departure from that of the streetfighter, with the Vitpilen 1301 adopting a more neo-retro character. Styling seems similar to the Vitpilen concept, though this bike seems more grown up. The subframe has been redesigned and the stubby rear section makes it impossible for the inclusion of a passenger seat. The registration plate has been moved to the rear tyre hugger. The riding position is front biased as opposed to the Super Duke’s upright riding position.
Propelling the Vitpilen 1301 is a 1301cc V-twin engine, which has been tweaked to make it Euro IV compliant. It gets a redesigned cylinder head and a different exhaust system. Looking at the bike, it seems like Husqvarna is aiming to take a shot at the powercruiser segment, which includes the likes of Yamaha VMax, Ducati Diavel and the Harley-Davidson V-Rod. While the prototype seems to be very close to production phase, it might be a while before the Vitpilen 1301 hits the road.
