Indian Government has announced a custom duty hike on imported motorcycles above 800cc. The custom duty has now been increased by 15 per cent from current 60 per cent to 75 per cent. This comes as a disappointed to motorcycle enthusiasts who always dreamt of buying an imported motorcycle.
The move will generate additional revenue for the government and also encourage manufacturers to set up assembly lines in here. India is one of the world’s biggest motorcycle markets and lots of manufacturers are serious about doing business here. Harley Davidson is one of the first manufacturers to have already set up a facility here to assemble nine motorcycles, with prices ranging between Rs 5.71 lakh and Rs 16.25 lakh.
The additional 15 per cent customs will lead to price hike in the range of 10 per cent to 15 per cent. It means that the bikes that were earlier priced at Rs 10 lakh are now expected to carry a tag of over Rs 11 lakh in the coming weeks.
