Triumph has launched the new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 in Malaysia. Both bikes are being made in India and will be exported to multiple markets, including Malaysia. Interestingly, the prices of the bikes have also been announced in the country – the Speed 400 costs RM 26,900 (Rs. 4.78 lakh) and the Scrambler 400X is pegged at RM 29,900 (Rs. 5.31 lakh). In India, these bikes are priced at Rs 2.33 lakh and Rs. 2.63 lakh, respectively (ex-showroom).
The Speed 400 was launched in India in July followed by the Scrambler 400 X’s launch in October. Both bikes are powered by the same engine but the design, cycle parts, and features differ to some extent. While the Speed is a neo-retro roadster, the Scrambler 400 X is, as the name suggests, a scrambler. The latter is taller and boasts a more imposing stance than the compact and minimalistic Speed 400. Both motorcycles get a full-LED lighting system, a semi-digital console, traction control, and dual-channel ABS. However, the ABS can be switched off for the rear wheel on the Scrambler.
The Scrambler 400 X rides on a 19-17-inch alloy wheel combination whereas the Speed 400 makes do with smaller 17-inch rims at both ends. Being a more adventure-oriented offering, the Scrambler also gets longer travel suspension, dual-purpose tyres, higher ground clearance, and a taller seat. Powering them is a common 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 39.5bhp and 37.5Nm of torque. This unit comes mated to a six-speed gearbox that is accompanied by an assist and slipper clutch.
