- New helmet norms to be implemented from 4 September
- Weight limit increased to 1.5kg
- All helmets should be ISI certified
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced new norms for two-wheeler helmets in India which will come into effect from 4 September.
According to the new norms, the earlier weight limit of 1.2kg for helmets has increased to 1.5kg. It means that foreign brands will now be able to stock and sell their helmets in India that usually weigh between 1.3kg to 1.5kg. Furthermore, these imported helmets will also need to comply with ISI norms before being sold.
While this revision of norms is positive news for international brands and motorcycle enthusiasts alike, the certification requirement would also mean a rise in price for imported helmets. The majority of helmets sold in India come under the 700gm to 1.2kg weight category. Nevertheless, with an increase in demand for premium motorcycles and need for personal mobility in current times, we can expect to see a growth in the sale of imported helmets.
And if you are looking to buy a helmet and are confused with which one to buy, we have a couple of guides to help you choose the perfect fit or type of helmet according to your need.
