The Bajaj Chetak used to be the most popular scooter in India. But the company pulled the plug on this scooter to focus more on motorcycles.
A couple of pictures of a scooter have come up on the internet which is rumoured to be the new Bajaj Chetak. While Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Motorcycles continues to show disinterest in the scooter segment, Bajaj’s Chairman Rahul Bajaj wants the company to be a part of the scooter business in the country. And it makes sense for Bajaj to start selling scooters in India because it has the required R&D expertise, dealership reach and the brand’s ‘value for proposition’ identity.
Currently, the scooter segment is dominated by Honda Activas but companies like Hero MotoCorp and TVS are also going aggressive with their launch plans due to the growth rate of the segment. Scooters have become a necessity for a household due to which there’s an ever-increasing demand for such vehicles. The leaked pictures shows the new Chetak in a modern-retro styling. While we can’t authenticate these images, having a retro-styled scooter might just work for the Pune-based manufacturer. With so many scooters in the market, Bajaj will need to have a very strong product to make a difference, so it might take the top-down approach – launch a scooter in the premium segment to create a distinct brand and then slowly launch scooters in the lower price bracket.
Bajaj is currently focusing on its new launch – the Dominar 400 and the updated Pulsar range. When contacted, the company refused to comment on the possibility of a Bajaj scooter.
