Despite being the world’s largest two-wheeler market, India is a very small market for superbikes and the premium segment accounts for a miniscule percentage of the total number of two-wheelers sold in the country. Kawasaki however, seems optimistic about its potential in the Indian market and is looking forward to grabbing a larger bite of the premium segment in India.
Speaking during the launch of the company’s new outlet in Chennai, Shigeto Nishikawa, deputy director of Kawasaki Motor India said that the company is expecting to grow hand in hand with the superbike market in the country and is expecting a jump of 30 to 40 per cent in sales in the current fiscal year. He said, “Last year, our cumulative sale was 250 units. Currently, the superbike market is growing around 30 to 40 per cent year-on-year. We expect to grow with the market."
Kawasaki Motors currently has just four exclusive retail outlets in the country, though it has a tie-up with Bajaj Motors which allows the Japanese manufacturer’s motorcycles to be sold in KTM showrooms. A majority of the company’s line-up is imported through the completely built unit route, which means that all its motorcycles are positioned in the higher end of the segment. The Kawasaki Z800 is one of the best-selling motorcycles in the company’s portfolio and Mr. Nishikawa said that the company will offer a new paint scheme in the near future.
