Kawasaki India recently debuted its first dual-sport motorcycle for the Indian market, the KLX 230. We spent some time riding it at the Pro Dirt Adventure Park and here are our first thoughts on it.
Like a typical dual-sport bike, the Kawasaki KLX 230 appears and also is a rugged bike. It clearly follows form over function and gets a tall, slim, build. The flat headlight with a cowl, wide handlebar, upswept exhaust, and slim seat are all elements of a textbook design.
We like the green colour on the KLX 230 and it enhances the overall aesthetics of the bike. Furthermore, Kawasaki is also offering a grey paint scheme as an option.
Powering the KLX 230 is a 233cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that makes 18.1bhp and 18.3Nm and is linked to a six-speed gearbox. However, we could only ride the KLX 230 in the second gear for the most part given the riding conditions and my limits as a beginner.
The engine feels peppy, and well-packed and has controlled levels of NVH. While the first gear has a relatively shorter drive, the second gear compensates for it. This engine linearly produces its power but is engaging enough for you to pin the throttle every once a while.
Since we rode the KLX 230 on the dirt track on road-biased tyres, there were a few moments when the front washed out. However, given the geometry, and the lightweight nature, it was easy to correct the line and be on two wheels.
Kawasaki has offered the KLX 230 with features like bulb illumination throughout, switchable dual-channel ABS and an LCD with smartphone connectivity using the Kawasaki application.
The asking price for the Kawasaki KLX 230 is yet to be revealed but the bookings have begun for a token amount of Rs. 5,000. However, if you want to know whether you should purchase the KLX 230, you should read our detailed first-ride review.
