The Kawasaki Versys 650 has been launched in India at Rs 6.6 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Versys 650 is a middleweight sports touring motorcycle which has been pitted against the likes of the Benelli TNT 600GT and the Honda CBR650F.
Aesthetically, the Versys 650 looks like a downsized version of the litre-class Kawasaki Versys 1000. The beaky semi-fairing accommodates a twin headlamp setup and a tall windshield. The fairing and the adjustable windshield have been aerodynamically shaped to enhance the touring abilities, while the footpeg and handlebar position have been optimised to offer a comfortable riding stance. The muscular fuel tank can gulp 21 litres of fuel. Despite it getting road tyres and the alloy wheels, Kawasaki claims that the Versys 650 is capable of handling a fair bit of off roading.
The Versys 650 is built around a double pipe diamond frame, which is based on the Ninja 650’s versatile platform. Powering the bike is a 649cc fuel-injected parallel-twin engine, delivering 68bhp and 64Nm of torque through a six-speed transmission. The suspension setup is made of 41mm adjustable Showa forks upfront and an offset monoshock with preload adjustability for the rear. Stopping power for the front wheel is provided by dual 300mm petal discs with two-piston callipers, while the rear wheel gets a lone 250mm petal disc with a single-piston calliper. ABS is offered as a standard fitment.
Though motorcycles like these make up a small percentage of the overall volumes, they are a part of a rapidly growing segment. These motorcycles are an attractive option for enthusiasts looking for a versatile motorcycle which can offer the best of both worlds (sports riding and comfort). While Kawasaki already has a middleweight sports touring motorcycle in the form of the Ninja 650, the Versys 650 comes with a rugged appeal which is missing in its supersports sibling. For now, Kawasaki is only offering the luggage panniers as optional accessories for the Versys 650. It is available only in a black paint scheme. The motorcycle is locally assembled from CKD kits imported from Thailand, which has enabled Kawasaki to offer such a competitive price tag.
