We were the first to tell you of Kawasaki's plans to launch the W800 - a modern retro motorcycle in India. Now, the bike has been kept on display at their Pune showroom.
The main intention of showcasing this bike is to find out if a modern retro Kawasaki motorcycle will be accepted in India. Currently, the company sells all sorts of naked, super sport and touring bikes in India due to which the market perceives Kawasaki as a sporty brand. While the launch of the W800 is confirmed, this exercise might help Kawasaki determine the right price. This move by Kawasaki has been triggered due to the good response for the Triumph Bonneville and the Ducati Scrambler range.
The W800 is powered by a 773cc parallel-twin engine that produces 47bhp at 6500rpm and peak torque of 60Nm. This motor is mated to a six-speed transmission. The suspension duties on the W800 are taken care of by 39mm telescopic forks at the front and twin shocks at the rear. The brakes are basic - a single 300mm disc with a twin-piston calliper at the front and 160mm drum at the rear. The bike tips the scales at 217kg and with a seat height of 790mm, it is accessible to short riders as well.
Expect the W800 to launch early next year with a very competitive price tag.
