Kawasaki has made its onslaught in the fast growing retro market space with the new Z900 RS. Offering a blend of the classic styling of the Kawasaki Z1 and the modern underpinnings of the Z900, the Z900 RS rubs shoulders against the likes of the Triumph Bonneville T100, Ducati Scrambler, BMW R nineT and the Yamaha XSR900. The dual-tone paint scheme and the shape of the tank hark back to the Kawasaki Z1, while components like the LED headlamp add a modern touch.
While the Z1 featured a fancy quad-pipe layout, the Z900 RS gets a relatively sober four-into-one design for the exhaust system.
The Z900 RS is built around the same trellis frame as the Z900, although it has been revised to offer upright seating and to accommodate a one-piece seat.
Beyond the flat handlebar is a dual-clock instrument console with analogue speedometer and tachometer, and a multi-functional LCD display.
Powering the Z900 RS is a revised version of the 946cc inline-four engine, tuned to offer better mid-range torque.
The engine delivers 110bhp and 98Nm of torque, and is mated to a six-speed transmission with a slipper clutch.
The Z900 RS also features a traction control system with two modes and an ‘Off’ setting. Switchable ABS is offered as standard.
The Z900 RS rides on 41mm inverted front forks with adjustable compression and rebound, and a rear monoshock with adjustable rebound and preload.
Unlike the Z900, the Z900 RS benefits from radially mounted Nissin callipers gripping on 300mm discs at the front.
