Just over a month after KTM unveiled the stupefying 1290 Super Adventure, the touring version of the adventure motorcycle has been spotted undergoing trials in Spain, earlier this week. Slated for a 2016 launch, this new motorcycle will be a successor to the 990 SMT (SuperMoto Touring), which was based on the now defunct 990 Adventure.
Going by the spy shots, the new adventure tourer will be equipped with a redesigned fairing and a bigger windshield for better wind deflection. The rear also gets a larger subframe and redesigned two-piece seat to make space for those big luggage panniers. It will also get a wider set of handlebars and different seating to afford a more comfortable riding position.
We expect KTM to borrow the 1,301cc V-twin engine from the 1290 Super Adventure for the new tourer. This engine delivers 180bhp and 143Nm of torque through a six-speed gearbox. It will also carry over the comprehensive electronics package from the 1290 Super Duke which includes ride by wire, traction control, ABS and a wheelie control system.
The spy shots show that the exhaust system has taken a beating, which indicates that the bike is still in its development phase. Once launched, this adventure touring motorcycle will rival the likes of Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200, Triumph Tiger Explorer, Aprilia Caponord 1200 and the BMW S1000XR among others.
