- KTM to open new plant in Hangzhou, China in June 2020
- Will produce KTM’s 790 and 890 models
- India could get the motorcycles as SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) units.
KTM is setting up a new manufacturing facility in China which will be operational from June 2020. And the manufacturer will shift production of the 790 Duke and 790 Adventure from its facility in Austria to China by September 2020.
Along with the 790 twins, the plant will also produce the recently unveiled 890 Duke and the upcoming 890 Adventure which is expected to make its debut at the 2020 EICMA. Moreover, CFMoto, which has a tie-up with KTM in China will be manufacturing their motorcycles at the same facility as well. Located in Hangzhou, the plant has a maximum annual production capacity of 1 lakh units. The motorcycles will be exported to Europe, USA, Australia and some parts of Asia as CBUs (Completely Built Units) whereas whereas India could receive the motorcycles as SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) units.
So does this shift mean that the 790 Duke you’ve been eyeing to buy for a while will get more affordable? Not really. The whole idea to relocate manufacturing to a country like China is to cut down on production costs and it is unlikely to decrease the cost of motorcycles.
