KTM has officially confirmed that a completely new twin-cylinder platform is in the works for 2017. While an 800cc streetfighter will be the first model to be based on this platform, we can safely expect it to spawn multiple models across different segments.
KTM recently released its annual investor report wherein it announced its plans of bringing out a ‘revolutionary’ twin-cylinder platform for its next generation models. While the report doesn’t let out any other detail, the previous spy shots of a parallel-twin Duke 890 test mule hint that a middleweight streetfighter will be the first model to employ this platform. Just like the current V-twin and single-cylinder platforms, we can expect this new parallel-twin architecture to pave the way for smaller capacity models.
The current trend among major motorcycle manufacturers involves utilising a single platform to churn out multiple models. This not only helps manufacturers save development costs, but it also contributes in cutting production costs, owing to component sharing among multiple models. While the 800cc model in itself is expected to be joined by a similarly sized sports tourer, it also makes sense to expect other smaller capacity versions to spawn off different body styles. With a global launch slated around late 2017, the first model might make it to the Indian market by mid 2018.
