After delaying it for almost three years, KTM has finally announced that the Freeride E will be unveiled later this month at the INTERMOT Show in Cologne, Germany. The Freeride E will be available in two versions- XC and SX, which will be priced at EUR 11,398 (Rs 8.90 lakh) and EUR 11,098 (Rs 8.67 lakh) respectively.
The XC is a road-legal motorcycle, perfect for some off-road action as well as the daily commute, and will be targeted at beginners and casual riders. The SX on the other hand, has been developed for closed track use and is expected to attract a more hardcore audience.
The Freeride E is built around a perimeter steel-aluminium composite frame with 43mm inverted forks in the front and a monoshock at the rear. Both the XC and SX employ a liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor which can produce 22bhp and 42Nm of torque. Being an electric motor, all of the 42Nm of torque is available from idle. Powering the electric motor is a replaceable 2.6 kWh lithium-ion PowerPack battery which takes 80 minutes for a full charge and 50 minutes to charge it to 80 per cent.
The disappointing part however, is that the battery pack will struggle to last for more than an hour of riding. While this is a really interesting concept, the Austrian manufacturer will have to work on increasing its range to make it a serious contender to other dirt bikes. Expect more details to be revealed over the next few days.
