KTM is going to issue a recall for the 690 Duke worldwide. The recall will involve fixing an issue with the wiring harness and the ABS modulator of the motorcycle.
KTM had announced a recall for its Adventure range a few weeks ago to fix a similar issue. Due to their proximity, the ABS modulator and wiring harness could come into contact with each other causing damage to the latter. This could potentially lead an electric charge to pass through the ABS modulator, causing it to overheat and melt. This can directly result in malfunction of the ABS units and eventually the brakes.
A similar design issue has been diagnosed in the KTM 690 Duke motorcycles manufactured between 2012 and 2016. Being a safety hazard, KTM dealerships in the US have been asked to inspect the wiring harness of the 690 Duke motorcycles and take necessary measures to prevent damage. We can expect the company to announce an official recall over the next few days.
It is surprising that the exact issue has been detected in motorcycles spanning different platforms. While neither the KTM Adventure range or 690 Duke are sold in India, the 390 Duke and the RC390 do get ABS. However, KTM India has confirmed that both these motorcycles are immune to this design issue and the recall.
