KTM has unveiled their latest electric dirt motorcycle, the Freeride E-SM at the 2014 Intermot show in Germany. This new electric bike was seen sharing the stage with the Freeride E-XC and the Freeride E-SX.
The Freeride E-SM is built on the same platform like the Freeride E-XC but comes with road tyres, street-specific suspension in addition to bigger disc with better calipers. The Freeride E-SM is powered by a 300V lithium-ion swappable battery that churns out 21.4bhp and 31Nm. The swappable unit makes lot of sense because if you run out of charge, there is an extra battery charged that is stored and can be used. This battery fully charges in 80 minutes and takes around 50 minutes to charge 80 per cent. The bike gets just one gear to transfer power to the rear wheels and this also means the absence of a clutch.
With a kerb weight of 110kg and its power figures, the E-SM offers good performance. The bike has three riding mores – economic, aggressive and dynamic. But in dynamic mode, the charge is expected to drain quickly than the rest of the two modes. But in normal riding conditions, the Freeride E-SM is expected to run for an hour before needing another round of charging. Also, there is no way you can distinguish between the two other Freeride motorcycles – only way you could do is through its decals and stickers.
Pricing of the KTM Freeride E-SM hasn’t been officially announced yet, but there are rumours about it being very pricey. And yes, this electric bike won’t make it to India anytime soon.
