KTM working on sensor-based safety technologies

- Will use Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection sytems

- 1290 Super Adventure will be the first bike to get it

KTM is working on sensor-based safety technologies that will come in the next generation 1290 Super Adventure.

The Austrian maker is working on two types of safety equipment, Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection. When Adaptive Cruise Control is activated, the bike automatically follows the vehicle in the front and maintains a constant gap. This is possible because of sensors that are placed on the front of the bike that detects the speed of the vehicle ahead. Also, the rider needs to keep his hand off the throttle and right leg off the rear for this system to work. This system will work only when the bike goes over 30kmph.

The Blind Spot Detection uses rear sensors to warn the rider of vehicles approaching from the rear. The mirrors will have integrated LED lights that will warn the rider. Along with the light illumination, there will be a message displayed on the instrument cluster. Recently, Ducati announced its intention to introduce radar systems on its motorcycles from 2020. The radar system will be a part of Ducati’s Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS), which are essentially rider aids that aim to make motorcycling safer.

We’re expecting more manufacturers to develop such advanced technologies to improve the safety aspect of the bike. Unfortunately, these systems are still years away from making it to production.
