Labour unrest is one thing that daunts the manufacturing industry in India. But the major victim of this unrest is the automobile industry, which over the last few years has seen some critical strikes. Hero MotoCorp is the latest victim where the labourers of the Haridwar facility have stopped the production.
The workers are demanding that the company reinstate few employees who had been suspended. This issue dates back to August 2013, when the workers stopped the production for the same issue. But somehow the management resolved the issue but suspended 38 workers for taking part in the strike. Later, 11 of the suspended employees were taken back but 27 workers remain suspended, which is the root cause of the current strife.
“There is a protest going on at Hero group’s Haridwar plant. But the state labour department is trying to resolve the issue by holding talks with these workers and the management,” said Harish Durgapal, labour minister, Uttarakhand.
The Haridwar facility manufactures high volume bikes like the Passion and the Splendor. This strike is bound to affect its output but, we believe if Hero MotoCorp wants to sell 12 million units by 2020, it needs to fix its labour issue, without which, this figure looks difficult to achieve.
