Marc Marquez has entered the record books by winning the final race of the 2014 MotoGP World Championship. With his 13th victory in the Valencian Grand Prix, Marquez has beaten Mick Doohan’s record for the most number of victories in a single season of the premier class motorcycle championship.
Despite scoring the pole position for the race, MotoGP ace Valentino Rossi failed to hold the lead in the Valencian Grand Prix for long. Marquez, ridinf on his Honda RC213V, got off to a good start and blew past Rossi in the first lap itself. While Andrea Iannone also overtook Rossi in the first lap, mechanical problems in his Ducati saw him drop to the back of the grid. With Lorenzo out of the race, Rossi finished the overall championship in second place, which is his best result since he won the 2009 Championship.
While rain threatened to play spoilsports for Marc, the few drops didn’t pose any threat for the 21-year old Spaniard or the other racers running on racing slicks. Marc’s MotoGP victory served as the cherry on the cake for the Marquez family, as his brother Alex won the Moto3 championship on the same day, at the Valencia track.
Speaking to reporters after the race, Marquez said, “I’m really happy with how it went, almost more so than when I won the championship in Japan. It is a great year for my family. During the race at times I was thinking about my brother as he said to me I had to do well. It was difficult to concentrate in the rain but in the end it all went well. I enjoyed the race.”
