Maintaining his perfect record at the race track, Marc Marquez has swept his fourth win at the Circuit of The Americas in Texas, US. With this victory, the 23-year-old Spaniard has cemented his position on top of the championship standings with a 21 point lead over the reigning MotoGP champion, Jorge Lorenzo.
While Lorenzo initially put up a fight for the first position, Marquez steadily increased his pace over the first half of the race, leaving Lorenzo to fight with with Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Iannone. By the end of the race, Marquez had put up over a six-second gap between him and Lorenzo. The battle for the second position meanwhile took an ugly turn as Iannone got taken out for the second time this season, this time by Pedrosa on lap number six. While Iannone had to limp back to the pits, Pedrosa managed to get back on his bike and go on for a few more laps before calling it quits owing to technical issues.
Iannone’s Ducati team mate made the most of these retirements, raking in the third position. The two Suzukis ridden by Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro made up the top five at the race. Valentino Rossi meanwhile, had a bad day as he crashed out of the race on the third lap, ending a 24-race streak of top five finishes. For the next race, the MotoGP caravan will move on to Jerez for the Spanish Gran Prix during the weekend of April 23 and 24.
