Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has launched CNG kits for scooters in Mumbai. Priced at Rs 15,000, these kits can be retrofitted on 18 scooter models.
The event also witnessed the flag off of the first batch of 25 CNG-powered Honda Activa scooters. These CNG conversion kits have been manufactured by Lovato, an Italian component manufacturer. Lovato claims that these CNG kits can reduce hydrocarbon emissions by 75 per cent and carbon monoxide emissions by 20 per cent.
The kits have been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and will be sold through Lovato outlets tomorrow onwards. Installing the kits is a three-hour job. The kit is offered with two 0.6-kilogram cylinders which give the scooter a range of 110km, making it significantly more frugal than its petrol-powered counterpart.
While this initiative is indeed a step in the right direction, the CNG refuelling stations in major cities are already overburdened serving taxi fleet services, three wheelers and passenger vehicles. With two-wheelers coming into equation, MGL is now planning to launch more refuelling stations across the city. To improve their convenience, MGL has also launched the MGL Connect Mobile App to help customers locate the nearest CNG fuel pump.
The Lovato CNG kits are compatible with the following scooters -
