-Jorge Martin finishes second
-Pecco Bagnaia finishes third
-Martin reclaims the lead in the Championship
Ducati Lenovo Team’s Enea Bastianini had a memorable British Grand Prix as he followed the Sprint win on Saturday with victory in the Main Race on Sunday. The Italian showed his class as he was the only rider to have conserved his tyres for a late attack for the win on the demanding Silverstone Circuit.
Pecco's perfect launch
As the lights went out, Pecco Bagnaia made a brilliant start and moved into the front of the field, pipping pole-sitter Aleix Espargaro going into Turn One. Pecco led the field through the initial stages of the Grand Prix and put a sizeable gap between himself and Jorge Martin who was in hot pursuit. The Italian set a good pace for up to half the race distance but from that point, he was getting reeled in by Martin. He later complained about lack of front tyre grip and considering his crash in the Sprint, he thought it was wise to settle for third and gain valuable points.
Mega Martin
Jorge Martin was looking to salvage the poor showing in the German Grand Prix where he crashed out of the lead in the race and the Championship standings. He practically handed the lead to Pecco going into the summer break. Martin looked like a man on fire as he pursued Pecco during the British Grand Prix.
The move came after half-race distance when he overtook Bagnaia cleanly and shot off into the distance. Pecco could only watch as he struggled to keep up with Martin’s pace who was aware that if anyone could mount a late attack, it would be Enea. His fears came true in the last couple of laps.
Bestia the best
Enea is known for his ability to keep life in the tyres towards the end of a Grand Prix and that’s what helped him rise to the top. After making a quick overtake on his teammate, Pecco, Bastianini began chasing Martin hard. With about two laps to go, Enea grabbed the lead from Martin and the latter had no response. Enea then cruised to the chequered flag, grabbing maximum points over the British GP weekend.
Twist in the Championship
While Martin could not win, he will find solace in the fact that he wrestled the lead in the 2024 MotoGP World Championship from Pecco. The Spaniard sits three points clear of Baganaia. Enea Bastianini is third in the Championship and a strong contender for the crown.
The next race takes place from 16 August-18 August at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
