The 2024 MotoGP World Championship has drawn to a close with Prima Pramac Ducati’s Jorge Martin clinching the title. This is the Spaniard’s first MotoGP World Championship.
The Martinator
Jorgen Martin only needed to finish 9th or higher in the race, even if Pecco Bagnaia won. With 19 points in hand over Pecco, Martin knew that he didn’t need to push unnecessarily.
This explains his measured pace in the 24 lap race at the Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona. Meanwhile, Pecco was leading the race with Marc Marquez on the Gresini Ducati in hot pursuit.
Pecco we pure class as he put in consistent lap times. Martin, however, was behind the leading duo by about 1.5 seconds. Martin also got a helping hand from his good friend Aleix Espargaro on the Factory Aprilia as he sat in fourth and battled with Alex Marquez on the Gresini Ducati, somewhat acting like a bodyguard for Martin and keeping the pressure off him.
A dream come true
As the chequered flag waved, an emotional Jorge Martin crossed the finish line, happy to finally realise his long-cherished dream. Martin sealed the Championship with 10 points more than Pecco Bagnaia. Throughout this season, Martin and Pecco made mistakes, crashed, and threw away crucial points.
In the end, the best man won. Marc Marquez, meanwhile, finished the season in third place. That’s pretty impressive considering that he was riding a year-old Ducati for a satellite team.
Next year, Jorge Martin will move to the Factory Aprilia team while Marc Marquez will hop onto the Factory Ducati team to join Pecco Bagnaia.
