Suzuki Ecstar rider Alex Rins highsided off his motorcycle at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, resulting in a broken left wrist. This incident occurred at turn 19 during his first timed lap in the third free practice session in the run up to the race.
Having landed on his wrist during the crash, Alex was diagnosed with a broken left wrist, dislocated ulna and radius fracture. A team of orthopedic traumatologists from the University Medical Center Brackenridge set his broken wrist and temporarily fixed it with pins. Alex further missed qualifiers and the race in Austin after being declared unfit to further participate in subsequent MotoGP sessions. Rins recently underwent a second surgery, which set the broken bones in forearm and wrist in place. Doctors will try to accelerate the process of recovery, although it might be six to eight weeks before Alex can return to the race track.
This is Alex Rins’s second major injury since he made his debut in the premier class this season. The week after season opener in Qatar, Rins crashed while training, sustaining a serious ankle injury. Suzuki’s test rider, Takuya Tsuda, will replace Alex Rins for the next race at Jerez in Spain during the upcoming weekend.
