The dust has settled in Mugello, and most of Italy is probably still recovering from celebrating an Italian win an Italian GP aboard an Italian machine. Here's how the riders' championship looks like after the Mugello round.
1. Maverick Vinales. With 105 points from a strong showing in the season so far except for the one DNF in Texas, Vinales now is 26 points clear of the second rider in the championship.
2. Andrea Dovizioso. Consistency is the name of the game here - Desmo Dovi has amassed his 79 championship points with consistency, and a sprinkling of a win and a second place each. However, he doesn't have much breathing room, as he is only four points clear of...
3. Valentino Rossi. The Doctor is having one of his up-and-down years in the championship. He's got himself a third place and two second places, but that race win has been elusive so far. 75 points and third place would have anyone else happy, but not Vale, who knows he can and must do better to win his tenth championship. Also, it can't be a comfortable position, knowing you're a mere seven points clear of the ever-threatening Marquez.
4. Marc Marquez. 68 points is good for fourth place in the championship. Marquez also has a win and a second place to his name this season - but with his front tyre problems under braking and his rear grip problems under acceleration only mounting, he is running out of time.
5. Dani Pedrosa. It has been one of the better years for the Baby Samurai, and he's got an equal haul of points as his teammate. However, crashing out on the last lap of the Mugello GP hurt his chances of a higher position - until now, a dominant race win and two second places had his chances looking good.
The rest of the riders in the championship are listed below in order. Special mention has to be made of a few: - Lorenzo is climbing up the order as he gets familiar with his new ride.
- Johann Zarco continues to stun the factory riders by remaining just four points off fifth-placed Dani Pedrosa. He is also the first-placed satellite rider - not to mention rookie - by a fair margin.
- Both KTMs aren't dead last, which is a pleasant surprise for a team in their first season.
