Nine time championship winner Valentino Rossi has broken his leg in a training accident yesterday. According to an official statement from Yamaha, it is a displaced fracture of the right leg, and he has broken both the tibia and fibula.
A displaced fracture means that it is multiple breaks, and the pieces aren't aligned correctly for healing. Rossi has undergone successful surgery since then and the bones have been set with a metal pin. He says he feels better already, and will try to be back as soon as possible.
This injury puts him out of contention for a 10th world championship this year, as a broken leg usually requires around six weeks before a rider can hop back onto his MotoGP machine. With a current deficit of 26 points to leader Dovizioso in the rider's championship, it is a very remote possibility that he will make it back in time to contend for the title.
