Danilo Petrucci was quite the hero of qualifying - squeaking through into Q2 after falling, then setting a lap time good enough for pole. It would have been the first pole position of his career, too, if it wasn't for those pesky kids that spaniard called Marc Marquez, who managed to eke out his eighth pole position in a row at the Sachsenring, and his first since Austin, another circuit where he is unbeatable.
Mention must be made of Pol Espargaro, who brought his KTM home in seventh place. That makes it the highest-ever qualifying result for the young KTM factory team. He took the same route as Petrucci, qualifying from Q1 to Q2, putting an almost-sure Jack Miller back into 13th place. Dani Pedrosa rounds out the front row, with Cal Crutchlow at the head of the second row. Crutchlow had an interesting point of view, saying that the Hondas always slide, so the riders are used to it and use it to get a good time at the newly-resurfaced Sachsenring. Jonas Folger is the first of the Yamahas in fifth. His teammate Zarco qualified 19th - something that is quite inexplicable. He seemed to have swapped places with Lorenzo, who, after a dismal Assen TT, has qualified in sixth. The tight, twisty Sachsenring rewards handling and doesn't need power, which explains why Aleix Espargaro on the Aprilia is in eighth. Rossi finds himself in a puzzling ninth after winning the previous race, with Dovizioso in tenth place splitting The Doctor and Vinales. The qualifiers from tenth onwards are listed below:
11. Maverick Vinales - Movistar Yamaha
