Silverstone is the birthplace of motor racing, and it never fails to throw up surprises every year. Last year it gave us Suzuki and Maverick Vinales's first MotoGP win - for the former, the first since returning to the class, and for the latter, the first ever. It also gave us a thrilling battle for second place, one that went right to the last lap. This year promises to be no different.
Qualifying gave us a few surprises, with Cal Crutchlow setting the pace on day 1 - and he wasn't even trying! Marc Marquez has a couple of big falls, but picked himself up and carried on. The Yamahas were on pace right from the start, with Valentino Rossi looking in very good form from the very first lap. His teammate Vinales also maintained good pace right through. Qualifying eventually had Rossi on pole for a long time, until Marquez came through and took it from him by the slimmest of margins - less than a tenth of a second. He also managed the first-ever lap of Silverstone in under two minutes. In third is the home hero, Cal Crutchlow. Bringing up the second row is Maverick Vinales, last year's winner. Jorge Lorenzo was the quickest of the Ducatis, qualifying fifth, and followed by his teammate in sixth. The full order of qualifying is as below:
