Michelin have announced that with the blessings of the Grand Prix Commission, it will include embedded wireless technology in the tyres they'll use for the 2017 season of MotoGP.
There is no clarity yet on how the system will work - we assume there will be an embedded RFID chip somewhere in the tyre carcass that will offer the tyre detection and related information to the ECU, which will then beam it to the track timing system. We aren't sure what data gathering and transmitting capability the system will have at this point in time. We also aren't clear whether the 'smart' tyres will be used only for races or all sessions. We'll be sure to report when more information surfaces.
One other update worth mentioning is that the two riders that qualify for Q2 from Q1 will have access to an additional set of soft slick tyres for Q2. This is a response to the issue raised by racers at the Safety Commission earlier in the 2016 season, that those two riders frequently crashed out of Q2 because they had to go through the session on tyres that were already used up in Q1.
