- Spotted testing for the first time
- Appears similar to the previously-sold Hero HF Dawn
- Could be re-introduced in the current Hero lineup
A new test mule of a commuter motorcycle has been recently spotted. On close inspection, it appears similar to the previously sold Hero HF Dawn. However, there are some substantial changes to the test mule.
While the round headlight, camouflaged fuel tank, and single-piece seat are reminiscent of the HF Dawn, the test bike’s rear side profile is slightly different. The tubular grab rail we saw on yesteryear’s Dawn seems to have made way for a much sleeker and flatter unit and so has the cladding. Then, the spoke wheels to appear to be substituted with alloys.
However, the tail light shape, exposed instrument cluster, side panels, and the sloper engine are similar to the older model. Previously, the Hero HF Dawn housed a 97.2cc single-cylinder engine that made a humble 8.2bhp and 8Nm. It was linked to a four-speed gearbox. You can expect the same setup if the HF Dawn makes a comeback at all. For reference, the Hero Splendor too gets the same engine but makes 7.91 bhp and a torque of 8.05 Nm, and the numbers are quite close. The test bike is equipped with telescopic front forks, dual rear springs, a front and rear drum brake and alloy wheels.
All said and done, Hero’s current lineup of commuter motorcycles has five offerings - HF 100, HF Deluxe and three Splendor trims (Splendor Plus, Splendor Plus Xtec, and Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0). All these bikes use the same engine and hardware setup, more or less. So, the revival of the HF Dawn may only make a difference as an option that has a separate visual identity.
It looks retro, while having the tested and trusted mechanicals of the popular Splendor. Moreover, the HF Dawn could be positioned below the Splendor by following the retro theme throughout and skipping the Xtec treatment for it. So, may be the re-entry of the Hero HF Dawn does make sense as an actual affordable commuter at a time when even Bajaj has recently launched the Freedom and even scooters have started retailing above Rs. 1 lakh!
