A prototype of the KTM 390 SMC R was recently spotted testing in Europe. The A2-compliant supermoto bike will be based on the next-generation KTM 390 Adventure and will be launched soon globally. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming 390 SMC R.
Design
The KTM 390 SMC R will feature a quintessential supermoto styling with high ground clearance and long-travel suspension. Although it will share most of its bodywork with the upcoming KTM 390 Adventure, the 390 SMC R will sport a bikini fairing and a flatter seat. The beak-style fender and suspension covers further highlight the supermoto styling.
What’s different?
The 390 SMC R is likely to use the same frame and subframe as the next-gen 390 Adventure. However, the supermoto will have a sharper steering geometry and different wheels than the ADV. The KTM 390 SMC R will run on 17-inch alloys with stickier tyres. Even the overall riding position is slightly aggressive to suit the supermoto's application. Meanwhile, the motorcycle is likely to offer more suspension travel than the 390 Duke, but lesser than the ADV.
Engine details
The upcoming KTM 390 SMC R will be powered by the same 399cc, liquid-cooled, LC4c engine that powers the new 390 Duke. The motor makes 45.3bhp and 39Nm of peak torque and comes paired with a six-speed gearbox. Like its Duke counterpart, the 390 SMC R is expected to get electronic rider aids such as traction control, cornering ABS, multiple ride modes, launch control, and more.
Launch timeline
The KTM 390 SMC R is expected to make its global premiere at EICMA 2024 in Milan, Italy. The motorcycle is likely to go on sale in Europe and other developed markets in early 2025. Although it isn’t known if KTM will launch it in India, the bike will be mass-produced at Bajaj’s Chakan facility in Pune. So, it makes a lot of sense for KTM to launch it in India.
