A new Royal Enfield Continental GT prototype has been spotted testing in Tamil Nadu. This is the first time that the twin-cylinder prototype has been captured undergoing trials in India.
Rumoured to be christened Continental GT 750, this is the first modern Royal Enfield to be based on a parallel-twin platform. While the lone spy shot doesn’t give us a look at the engine, the twin exhaust pipes sticking out of the back hint at a twin-cylinder powertrain. Reports suggest that the new engine displaces 750cc and has a power output of around 50bhp. Apart from fuel injection and liquid cooling, the new motorcycle will be equipped with ABS to meet European norms. It gets conventional telescopic front forks and Paoli dual springs at the rear.
Royal Enfield’s ambitious plans include becoming the global leader in the mid-size segment. While the company has tasted success in India, the global demand has been poor due to the lack of a competitive middleweight in its line-up. With this new parallel twin platform, Royal Enfield will become a direct competitor of popular brands like Harley-Davidson and Triumph. The production version of the Continental GT 750 is expected to be unveiled over the next few months.
