Piaggio has issued a recall for 2,613 scooters to fix issues with defective fuel pumps. The recall includes 12 Piaggio and Vespa models built between 2008 and 2011.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government agency responsible for identifying and enforcing automobile recalls in the US, the faulty impeller in the fuel pump may swell over time. This could decrease pump clearance, causing the scooter to repeatedly stall and fail to restart. The problem usually occurs when attempting to restart the scooter once it has been off for 15-20 minutes.
Piaggio has announced that the faulty component in Vespa and Piaggio scooters will be replaced at dealerships, free of cost. So far, it is not clear whether Vespa scooters sold in India are affected by this problem.
