This is the second time KTM’s parallel-twin middleweight motorcycle has been spotted testing. This spotting is much more revealing and lets out details on the motorcycle that will sit between the 690 and 1290 Super Duke R globally.
Starting with new engine, it displays the compact architecture of a modern inline twin-cylinder powerplant that appears short front to rear. It incorporates all the current technology, including liquid-cooling, double-overhead cams with four-valve per-cylinder and ride-by-wire. There are rumours that it will use a 270-degree crank angle as opposed to the more typical 180 or 360-degree cranks.
In terms of looks, in its cladded test-mule form the bike still reveals a few design features. The headlight, taillight and swingarm are very similar to the components on the latest 690 Duke. The exhaust is routed to go under the engine and end at muffler on the right side. The ergonomics look to be similar to other KTM Dukes, with an upright riding position mixed with slightly rear-set foot pegs.
The Duke 890 will come with steel trellis frame and a WP (a KTM subsidiary) fork and Brembo brakes. Tyre sizes appear to be the typical 120/70 and 180/55 on 17 inch wheels.
If this motorcycle is manufactured by KTM-Bajaj in India, we can expect to see very competitive pricing. From the crude form of the test mule of the motorcycle, we can tell it’s still in development form and that it could launch sometime next year. Stay tuned to BikeWale for more updates.
