- 250-400cc segment has very less competition
- Will have high-level of localisation when it goes into production
- Could be a global product
Piaggio India is interested in having a presence in the growing 250-400cc motorcycle space, revealed their new MD, Diego Graffi.
The top-honcho has been keeping a close watch in this segment as there’s a high rate of growth and very few manufacturers present. Currently, the company sells only high-displacement motorcycles through its Aprilia and Moto Guzzi brands. But the rest of the world is already moving to mid-capacity motorcycles and the Italian maker doesn’t want to be left behind.
Earlier this year, the company tested the waters by showcasing the Aprilia RS150 and the Touno 150. The reactions were very encouraging and that spurred the company´s decision to produce these bikes in India. In fact, the top-honcho went on to say that they will manufacture the bikes in India and bring about a high degree of localisation whenever the 250-400cc motorcycle goes into production.
Piaggio has been slowly but steadily infiltrating interesting and volume league products into the Indian market. First it was the Aprilia SR150, which was followed by the SR125. Next up is the SR 125 Strom, which will be launched later this year to cater to a wider customer base.
