Piaggio showcased the Liberty scooter at the recently concluded 2014 Auto Expo. The scooter was seen sharing stage with other Vespa scooters like the 946 and the S, and interestingly, got a very good response. Now, there are reports that the Italian manufacturer is planning to launch the Liberty Scooter in India.
Unlike the other scooters sold in the market, the Liberty is a step-through which is quite famous in markets like Indonesia and Thailand. The company is currently talking to various vendors to source the parts, as the scooter will be completely manufactured at the company’s Baramati facility.
The Piaggio Liberty is available in 125c and 150cc engine capacities but we can expect the former to make its way to India. The 125cc engine churns out 102bhp at 7,500rpm and a maximum torque of 10.43Nm at 6,000rpm. It uses a continuous variable transmission (CVT) to transmit power to the rear wheel.
The scooter comes with various features that might prove beneficial for the customers. It gets theft immobilizer, a standard feature on the scooter, modern instrument cluster that shows the speedometer, trip meter, fuel indicator and a clock with date. Front disc brake is standard and with a storage capacity of 10.8-litre, it can accommodate a half face helmet easily. The company claims a fuel efficiency of 59kmpl at 50kmph.
In the international market, the Piaggio Liberty is available in three colour options - Blu Midnight, Bianco Perla, Nero Grafite and Marrone Onix. We can expect all these colours to be available in India, once it is launched. We are expecting Paggio to position the Liberty brand below Vespa in the Indian market, due to which the pricing will be competitive as well. Expect the company to price the Liberty little above the Honda Activa.
