Piaggio has announced a 71 per cent growth in two-wheeler sales in India in 2017. The company sold over 67,700 scooters in the last year as opposed to the 39,600 scooters it had managed in 2016.
Scooters contribute 62 per cent towards Piaggio’s overall sales numbers, which is then followed by commercial vehicles and motorcycles. Both the Vespa and Aprilia scooter range were the main drivers of this growth in India. Piaggio seems to have been undeterred by the aftershocks of demonetisation and the industry’s move to BS-IV emission norms. While major two-wheeler manufacturers witnessed a slump, the Piaggio group managed a record breaking growth over the year. In comparison, the Italian group’s global sales grew only by 3.9 per cent in the same period.
The Aprilia SR 150 singlehandedly came close to outselling the entire Vespa range of scooters in the last year, thanks to its unique appeal and lucrative price tag. To capitalise on its success, Piaggio recently introduced an entry-level variant in the SR range, called the SR 125. Later in the year, Piaggio will launch another scooter called the Storm 125, which is a customised and trendier version of the SR 125.
