Yes! You read that right. Piaggio scooters could be launched in India in the next few months, but won’t get the original brand name. Rather, these scooters will be launched as Aprilia range of scooters in India.
With the launch of the Aprilia SR150, the company is very clear that it wants to make a big difference in the Indian scooter segment. While the overall response to this new 150cc scooter was good, the Italian manufacturer wants to launch more products in India. Interestingly, at the 2014 Auto Expo, a very senior Piaggio official told BikeWale that they plan to launch the Piaggio range of scooters in India. But what we believe is that, the company finally found out that it’ll be difficult for them to sell these scooters under the Piaggio brand and that’s why it took the help of its racing brand – Aprilia which is more known and has a fan following in the country.
While some would say that Aprilia already had the SR125, then why the Piaggio relation. Well, to make things easy, the Aprilia SR125 is nothing but a Piaggio Typhoon 125. The same official went on to say that there’s a very good market for a 14-inch wheels scooter and they would want to explore that segment. The result is quite evident now.
We’re quite excited about this development. We’ll bring you more information on this, very soon. Stay tuned!
