Driven by the growing demand for its scooters, Piaggio is going to double its dealership network in the current financial year. While the dealership count stood at 150 in March 2017, the company plans to increase this to 300 by the end of this financial year.
In the first quarter of 2017, Piaggio sold over 13,400 scooters in the Indian market, up from the 6,500 units it had managed in the first quarter of 2016. The Aprilia SR150 has been the biggest contributor towards this growth, helping the company double its scooter sales. However, the Baramati factory, where the Vespa range and SR150 are produced, is yet to utilise its full capacity. The company hopes to further boost its sales numbers with the widening of its network, with a focus on adding dealerships in north and east India.
The SR150 seems to have captured the imagination of the Indian audience with its racy styling, sprightly performance and the lucrative price tag. For those looking for even more performance from the SR150, the company launched the SR150 Race with a reconfigured CVT gearbox. Piaggio is reportedly also planning to launch a 125cc version of the scooter, although the company has so far refused to comment on these speculations.
