Piaggio has announced that the Vespa 300 GTS and the Vespa 946 are going to be launched in India June, this year. While the company has been contemplating introducing these premium scooters in the Indian market for over two years now, Mr Stefano Pelle, CEO, Piaggio Vehicles India has now officially confirmed these plans.
The Vespa 946 is the flagship model in Vespa's global line-up. It is the most premium and luxurious model offered by the Italian marque, and is pegged as more of style statement than an everyday ride. The Vespa 946 is powered by a 125cc fuel-injected single-cylinder engine which deliver 12bhp and 10Nm of torque. With a price tag of over Rs 8 lakh, it goes without saying that the Vespa 946 would be one of the most exclusive scooters that you can buy in India.
The Vespa 300 GTS on the other hand, would be a more 'affordable' scooter with a price tag of around Rs 5 lakh. Unlike the Vespa 946 though, the Vespa GTS 300 also gets the punch to match its looks, courtesy a 278cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine. This liquid-cooled fuel-injected unit delivers 21bhp and 22Nm of torque, through a CVT transmission. The GTS 300 rides on 12-inch wheels, both of which get a 220mm disc brake for good stopping power. It also gets a traction control system and ABS.
Both the Vespa 300GTS and the Vespa 946 would be imported to India as completely built units, which means they will attract heavy custom duties. Once launched in the second half of this year, Vespa is sure to have a monopoly these segments, thanks to the lack of any existing or anticipated competition.
